Florence (known locally as Firenze) may be overlooked by it’s younger brother Pisa but it is more than worth any time spent in the city. It’s regarded by most who visit as a beautiful city, due in no small part to it being the heart of the Renaissance. As such, there’s an endless supply of arts and architecture to fill your travelling time with.
Pick of the Week: Quito

Quito, the capital of Ecuador, lies between two mountain ranges and is founded on the ruins of an ancient Inca city. The most notable part of the city is its altitude – it is about 10,000 feet above sea level (2,800 metres). It was the first city to be named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978, due to its history and geography.
Death in Ecuador

Five British women have died in Ecuador while on a backpacking trip. They were on a gap year and died while travelling in a bus between the capital Quito and Puerto Lopez. Twelve other Britons have been hurt, as well as a French national and two Ecuadorians.
Four of the five were teenagers; Indira Swann was just 18. Rebecca Logie, Lizzie Pincock and Emily Sadler were 19, and the tour leader was Sarah Howard, aged 27.
Although a horrific accident, this incident shouldn’t put you off backpacking – the group were using a reputable travel company, who in turn were using a bus company well known to them.
Pick of the Week: Havana

Havana, and the whole of Cuba, used to be a hotbed for tourism until Communism took over in the 1950s. It’s slowly becoming a popular destination again though, since it was reopened to tourists in the 1990s. But if you’re from the United States, don’t expect to get in. The US government has imposed an almost total ban on travel for their residents.
What To Take

So then, you’ve decided what countries you want to visit – or at least, what countries not to visit. And you’ve got your itinerary planned for when you get there. But what to put in that backpack of yours? And yes, it should be a backpack – having a suitcase on wheels just won’t work. But never fear, here’s a handy guide for what you might need.
Clothes: Obviously quite important, but the number one thing that people get wrong. For one thing, work out what type of clothes you’ll need – for example, don’t take just t-shirts if you’re visiting the Himalayas. You only really need a few of each item – you don’t want to have to carry your whole wardrobe on your back. Remember though, you’ll be the one doing the washing, so one handy tip is to wear your clothes for a few days. Including your pants.
Politics And Elections In Zimbabwe

The Foreign & Commonwealth Office have changed their advice to travellers due to unease following the recent elections. They are advising UK residents going to Zimbabwe to “keep a low profile, exercise caution, and avoid all areas where demonstrations may be held or where there are large gatherings of people.” The US State Department has issued similar concerns. Riot police have already been sent out in the capital Harare.
The concern grows from delays to election results being announced. The longer the Election Commission waits to announce, the more worried the international community is. It’s certainly possible, however, that violence could break out even when the result is announced.
Pick of the Week: Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires is the capital of Argentina, and is one of the largest cities in Latin America. As such, tourists flock from all over the world, and the city offers a range of cultural events and nightlife. It’s also the starting point for anyone wanting to explore the country. Visitors coming from North America or Europe will find the prices at the least, very reasonable.
